Understanding Neuropsychological Assessment
Neuropsychological assessment evaluates how the brain is functioning across multiple cognitive domains. It helps identify changes in thinking, memory, attention, and other brain functions—whether from injury, illness, developmental conditions, or aging. These evaluations provide critical information for diagnosis, treatment planning, and understanding cognitive strengths and weaknesses.
Memory & Learning
- Difficulty remembering recent events
- Forgetting names or appointments
- Trouble learning new information
- Getting lost in familiar places
- Repeating questions or stories
- Misplacing objects frequently
Attention & Processing
- Difficulty concentrating or focusing
- Easily distracted
- Slowed thinking or processing
- Trouble following conversations
- Mental fatigue
- Difficulty multitasking
Executive Function
- Difficulty planning or organizing
- Poor problem-solving
- Impulsive decision-making
- Trouble managing time
- Difficulty with complex tasks
- Problems with judgment
Who Benefits from Neuropsychological Assessment?
Brain Injury (TBI)
Concussion, traumatic brain injury, sports injuries, car accidents. Assessment helps document cognitive effects and guide rehabilitation.
Stroke or Medical Conditions
Post-stroke cognitive changes, brain tumor, seizure disorders, infections affecting the brain. Evaluation guides treatment and recovery planning.
Dementia & Memory Concerns
Early signs of Alzheimer's, memory decline, distinguishing normal aging from dementia, tracking cognitive changes over time.
Neurodevelopmental Conditions
Complex ADHD, autism with cognitive concerns, intellectual disability, evaluating cognitive impact of developmental disorders.
Psychiatric Conditions
Differentiating cognitive effects of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia from neurological conditions.
Pre/Post-Surgical Planning
Baseline testing before surgery, epilepsy surgery evaluation, monitoring cognitive function after procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does neuropsychological testing take?
The entire process—from initial consultation to receiving your comprehensive report—takes approximately 2 weeks. The testing session itself is typically 4-6 hours (may be split across two sessions if needed for fatigue management).
What's the difference between neuropsych testing and an MRI?
MRI/CT scans show brain structure (anatomy), while neuropsychological testing shows brain function (how well different parts are working). Many conditions cause functional problems without structural changes visible on imaging.
Can neuropsych testing diagnose dementia or Alzheimer's?
Neuropsychological testing is a critical component of dementia diagnosis. While we cannot diagnose Alzheimer's definitively (only autopsy can), testing identifies patterns of cognitive decline consistent with various types of dementia and distinguishes them from normal aging.
Do I need a referral from my doctor?
No referral is necessary. However, we recommend bringing any relevant medical records, brain imaging results, and medication lists to help us understand your complete medical picture.
Will this help with my disability claim?
Yes. Our comprehensive neuropsychological reports provide detailed documentation of cognitive functioning and functional limitations—critical for Social Security Disability, long-term disability claims, and workers' compensation cases.
Can testing be done after a concussion?
Yes. Neuropsychological testing documents cognitive effects of concussion/mild TBI, tracks recovery, guides return-to-work/sport decisions, and identifies when additional intervention is needed.
Do you take insurance?
We provide insurance verification and detailed superbills for out-of-network reimbursement. Many clients receive 50-80% reimbursement from their insurance company.
